English Football League 2016/17 Preview

The English Football League kicks off again for the 2016/17 season on Friday 5th August as Fulham entertain promotion favorites Newcastle United in the English Football League’s curtain raiser at Craven Cottage in the Skybet Championship.

The next day on Saturday the rest of the teams in the Championship start the new season with Derby County [4.0 to win promotion] taking on Brighton [4.5] being one of the highlights of the opening day as two promotion challengers do battle. My team Blackburn Rovers [23.0] are ranked 4th from bottom in the skybet betting odds and will start off with a difficult home tie at Ewood Park against Norwich City [3.5] who was only last season relegated from the Premiership and are a team tipped to bounce right back.

Newcastle United [1.57] are the red-hot favorites to win the league and make an immediate return to the top flight under the tutelage of Champions League winner Rafa Benitez.

Despite losing Georginio Wijnaldum to Liverpool for £23.38m and England man Andros Townsend to Crystal Palace for £13.26m, they still retain a Premiership quality squad. They even added to their squad during the summer with even more quality with the arrivals of Prem quality players in Dwight Gayle from Palace and Matt Ritchie from Bournemouth (both for £10.2m) who dropped down a league to the surprise of many as both players are for sure Premiership quality.

One signing that I believe will be massively important for Newcastle though is the capture of Scottish International centre-back Grant Hanley from joins from Blackburn to add defensive steel and Championship league experience for the Geordies at £6.1m

Also in contention for promotion are Aston Villa [3.5], Norwich City [3.5], Derby [4.0], Wolves [5.0], Sheffield Wednesday [4.5] and Brighton [4.5] I’d personally take a punt on Newcastle, Sheff Wed and maybe Brighton to gain promotion but Leeds Utd could also be good value [13.0]

At the other end of the table Burton, Rotherham and Barnsley are favorites for the drop down to League One.

League One see’s Sheffield United [3.0] as solid favorites to go up after a disappointing campaign last season under Nigel Adkins. Now under relatively new boss Chris Wilder they have a team well suited to the division and have made several astute buys this close season. The Bramall Lane outfit also have Billy Sharp up front and you can almost guarantee will bang in 20+ goals again this season.

Charlton [4.0], MK Dons [4.33], Bradford [4.33] and Millwall [4.33] are the others tipped to chase them. I’d go for the obvious pick of Sheff Utd, alongside MK Dons who despite going down from the Championship last season have a great stadium and set up and are a club with a good chance of going right back up. I think we’ll also see a surprise element in League One this season with someone like Bristol Rovers [8.5] perhaps sealing promotion via the play-offs.

Oldham Athletic, Bury and Shrewsbury Town don’t look too good and could struggle to survive this season in League One.

League Two looks like it will be headed by Portsmouth [2.0]. Pompey got upset by Plymouth in the play-offs last season but look set to go one better this time round.

Doncaster [2.50] in particular look like they could push them hard with Leyton Orient [3.0], Luton Town [3.0], Cambridge [3.5] and Plymouth [4.33] likely to challenge for play-off berths.

Accrington Stanley [28.0] could be outsiders worth a bet and could very well sneak into the play-off’s once again so they are surely a good value bet.

Morecombe, Crawley Town and Stevenage look set to struggle and face the prospect of dropping out the English Football League.

  • So how’s your pre-season picks for promotion and relegation going guys? Who’s going up? Newcastle picking back up and into 4th after 5 games. Looking bad for Blackburn in the Championship, bottom with just 1 point from 5 games!
